BACKWASH Process of re-directing water that has been filtered back through the multi-media filters to remove solids and organic matter for discharge to waste or drain line. BASKET STRAINER The device fitted on intake piping through which larger solids greater than 1/8 "(3 mm) are rejected or removed prior to entering the feed pump. CLEANING CYCLE Action during which the flow of product water stops, and a solution of water and specially selected detergents are pumped at high velocity across the membrane to remove contaminants from the membrane. FEED PUMP Centrifugal pumping unit that pulls the water from the source and increase the pressure of the feed water and transfers the water to a Hydro-Cyclone, multi-media filter or system inlet. HOUSINGS Structure in which either filters and or membranes are retained during operation. Typically manufactured from corrosion resistant materials and designed for pressurized applications HYDRO-CYCLONE Dynamic separation device that utilizes a combination of centrifugal force and negative pressure, efficiently removes most sand, and grit. Solids drop out of suspension and are discharged out the bottom while the water flows out the top to the next area of filtration. MULTI-MEDIA FILTER(s) Tank or vessel utilizing permanent media used to filter raw water. Water passes through the multiple layers of media removing suspended solids and biological material down to 50 micron is size. SYSTEM FILTER(s) Cartridge elements or bag filters which are used to further remove solids prior to the membrane process module, functions as the final polishing filter and as a safety filter in the Feed Water system. Elements are staged 30 micron followed by 5 micron high-surface-area filter or filters, providing extremely high-surface-area and dirt holding ability. BOOSTER PUMP Mechanical device that receives the filtered water from the system filter, it increases the pressure to 200 to 1000 psi and forces the water through the membranes. MEMBRANES Engineered media made from thin-film permeable reinforced material that water passes through separating based on molecular weight the feed water into two separate streams; product and reject. PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE The regulating device that is set at the design operating pressure by the operator to maintain pressure on the membranes which in turn effects the product flow rate. PRODUCT High quality water produced by the reverse osmosis membranes for consumption. PRODUCT AND REJECT METERS The flow meters mounted on control panels providing visual monitoring of the two separate streams. REJECT Waste water rejected by the membrane which has a concentrated level of slats or other elements not desired in the product water. WATER QUALITY MONITOR Total Dissolved Solids(TDS) Meter. Measures the product water salt content, and controls the diverter valve directing the product water either to the Product Outlet, for use as potable water, or diverted to the Drain or Reject Outlet. |
